General Information
Lakshadweep islands are the single coral islands of India. The total number of islands in this region is 36. History
Primeval history of Lakshadweep is unrecorded. What now passes for history is based on various legends. Local traditions attribute the first settlement on these islands to the period of Cheraman Perumal, the last king of Kerala. The advent of Islam dates back to the 7th century around the year 41 Hijra. The Portuguese also ruled the islands for a number of years.
Geography
The total land area of Lakshadweep islands is around 32 sq. kms. It is situated at 8 and 12-degree north latitude and 71 and 74 degree East longitude. This enthralling and captivating group of coral islands in the Arabian Sea is the smallest Union Territory of India. This archipelago consists of 12 islets, three reefs and five submerged banks. Out of the 36 islands of Lakshadweep, only 10 islands are inhabited. Lakshadweep lies about 220 to 440 Km from the coastal city of Cochin in Kerala.
Climate/Temperature
Due to the proximity of the sea, Lakshadweep experiences a tropical climate. All the islands of this region experience a moderate climate throughout he year. The maximum temperature recorded in summer is around 32 degrees C. In winters also the temperature does not fall to extreme. In winter the mercury falls to around 25 degrees C. The humidity in the atmosphere is around 70-75 %.
Religions
Three main religions are followed in the union territory of Lakshadweep. These are Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam. Majority of the people in Lakshadweep are Muslims. Then there is a small amount of population consisting of Hindus and Christians.
Languages Spoken
Malayalam is the chief language of Lakshadweep. It is the mother tongue of the local people except those in Minicoy who speak the Mahl language. Bengali, Gujrati, Hindu, Kannada, Oriya, Tamil, Telegu, Konkoni, Urdu and English are also spoken by the migrants who are employed in the Union Territory.
