General Information

History
The substantiation of Maurayan era in Karnataka is the Ashoka's rock diktat found in the state. The great Chandragupta Maurya ruled the state and espoused Jainism at Shravanabelagola. Subsequent to him several other dynasties ruled the land. Some of them were the Chalukyas, the Hoysalas and the Vijayanagars. These dynasties appendaged worth to the cultural and spiritual value of the state. The most eminent empire that ruled Karnataka was the Vijayanagar dynasty. Later, Hyder Ali and his brave son Tipu Sultan ruled the state. In November 1, 1973, the integrated state was named as Karnataka.
Geography
The total geographical area of Karnataka is around 1,92,000 sq. kms. The position of Karnataka is such that it wraps a distance end to end of 760 kilometers from the north to the South and sprawls over a breadth of 420 kilometers from the east to the west. The pleasant state of Karnataka is situated on a tableland, which lies at the meeting point of the Western and Eastern Ghats. Flanked by Maharashtra and Goa in the North, Kerala in the West, Andhra Pradesh in the East and Tamil Nadu in the South, Karnataka lies ensconced in between 11.5 degree North and 18.5-degree North latitudes and 74 degree East and 78.5-degree East longitudes.
Climate/Temperature
The state of Karnataka experiences three different climatic conditions. Geographically the land is divided into three different climatic zones. One is the coastal region that experiences a pleasant climate throughout the year. Second is the north interior Karnataka that experiences sizzling, semi-arid, sultry steppe type of climate. The third zone is the south zone that experiences hot seasonally dry tropical savanna climate. Basically the state of Karnataka is swathed with a gratifying cool and tranquil climate that soothes the mind and senses of the inhabitants. A constant gentle breeze always flows in the state. The entire Karnataka exhibits three distinct types of climate: 1) Tropical Monsoon Climate 2) Winter and 3) Summer.
Religions
The state of Karnataka played a very crucial role in shaping the present day Indian religion and philosophy. Hinduism, Jainism and Islam are the three main religions of the state. The great Saint Madhvacharya (1238-1317 AD), proponent of dvaita philosophy and Raghavendra Swami were born here.

The main language spoken in the state of Karnataka is Kannada. This language is spoken by a majority of people. Around 65% of the total population of Karnataka speaks Kannada language. This language belongs to the Dravidian family. Other languages spoken in Karnataka are Hindi, Urdu and English.
