General Information
Chandigarh – the capital city of Punjab and Haryana is a very snobbish place with wide roads and capacious residential colonies. The unique name, ‘Chandigarh’ is derived from a Goddess known as Shri Chandika. The Goddess Chandika is the Goddess of power. The city Chandigarh came into existence in 1953. The city was planned and built at that time. Compared to all the cities of India, Chandigarh is the only city, which was planned and designed by one person, viz. Le Corbusier. He was a great architect. Chandigarh was infact the fist planned city of India. Chandigarh is classified as a Union Territory because it is administered by the central government.
History
The history of Chandigarh dates back to the time when India got freedom in 1947. At that time when the partition of India took place, umpteenth number of migrants from west Punjab settled in the eastern towns in India. During that time, Lahore the capital of undivided Punjab went to Pakistan and Indian side remained without a capital. At that time there was a need of a capital city. So Chandigarh was made the capital of Punjab.
Geography
Chandigarh is situated in the foothills of the Shivalik range. It has 5 towns and 25 villages. There are barely any woods in this union territory, apart from the small tracks of forest.
Climate/Temperature
The high-class city of Chandigarh experiences extreme temperatures. The temperature is very hot in summer time and freezing cold during winter. The classy city of Chandigarh enjoys an extreme climate with hot summers and chilly winters. The summer season is from March to June and winter is experienced during the months of November to February. Monsoon arrives in the month of July and stretches up to September. Best season to visit Chandigarh is between the months of August to November. During this time there is moderate temperature in the city, neither too hot nor too cold.
