Situated majestically amidst four mountains at an altitude of 920 meters above sea level is the beautiful hill station called Yelagiri or Elagiri in Tamil Nadu. It has a pleasant climate all through the year (even during the winter season) which attracts a lot of tourists. It is easily accessible by road from Bangalore and Chennai. Yelagiri is a cluster of 14 villages which is inhabited by tribals. Each village has temples dedicated to Lord Murugar. At Nilavar (one of the villages in Yelagiri) there is a Devi temple for Kadavu-Nachiyar, which is open to the public to offer pujas to the deity only on Fridays between 11:00 to 12:00 in the morning. The local folks believe that the devi is very powerful and hoards of people come to the temple to pay obesience to the deity on Fridays. Yelagiri is famous for the various treks it offers and hence a lot of trekkers come to this place. The highest peak in Yelagiri is Swami Malai, which soars to a height of 4338 meters from Mangalam. It takes about an hour to climb this hill and one can get a birds eye view of this picturesque town from atop the hill. There are also smaller peaks like Javadi Hills and Palamathi Hills which can be easily scaled. A 05km trek downhill from Yelagiri will reach one to the Jalagamparai Waterfalls. After a very tough trek one gets to see the scenic beauty of the waterfall from the side of the mountains. One can also see the quaint villages and the rich green pastures in this area. There is a small temple next to the falls. An artificial lake excavated in an area of 57 sq. meters is the Punganur Lake in Yelagiri. Tourists come here for boating and also a variety of birds can be seen here.
