Saputara literally meaning the abode of the serpents is the only hill station in Gujarat and is situated at an altitude of 873 mts above sea level. Located in the picturesque Dang forest area of the Sahyadris; Saputara has been developed as a hill resort with the main attraction being the Saputara Lake. One can enjoy boating in the Saputara Lake with a minimal entry fees. Most of the hotels have been developed in and around the Saputara Lake. Saputara is flanked by beautiful gardens like Lake Garden, Rose Garden and the Step Garden making it a perfect place of repose for the wanderers. Saputara has a uniform and pleasant weather all round the year and is a perfect haven for tourists. It is 185 kms (approximately 05 hours) from Mumbai and is perfect for a weekend visit. Saputara is well connected by road and daily buses operate from Mumbai and Nashik. Other than Saputara Lake, weekenders and pilgrims also visit the Nageshwar Mahadev Temple, devoted to Lord Shiva. People also flock the Saputara museum to get an insight on the life and cultures of the Dang tribes. One can also visit the Vansda National Park in Saputara to see tigers, leopards, python, four-horned antelope, pangolin, rusty-spotted cats and giant squirrels. However, prior permission is required to visit this park. The Gira Waterfalls emerging from the Kapri tributary, located 52 kms from Saputara is an excellent picnic spot. A further drive brings one to the Unnai Mata Temple and the hot springs around it. Another memorable excursion from Saputara is the Purna Sanctuary which is located 60kms north of Dangs. Situated in the midst of bamboo trees this is an ideal attraction for the trekkers. A must see for all is the Sunrise Point which gives a panoramic view of Saputara and the adjoining village of Malegaon. The best time to visit this is in the wee hours of the morning so that the one may get enjoy the breath taking view of the hill station on sunrise.
