About Pachmarhi
The only hill station in Central India is Pachmarhi. Situated at an altitude of 3500 feet above sea level in the Satpura ranges it is a vibrant countryside and is also known as ‘Satpura ki Rani’. It is famous for the cave paintings some of which have been dated to be 10000 years old. It is easily accessible by rail; the nearest railway station being Piparia. One can have a comforting 48kms drive to reach Pachmarhi from Piparia. By road one can drive from Jabalpur (approximately two hours drive), Itarsi (approximately one hour drive) and Bhopal (approximately four hours drive). This hill station was discovered by Captain Forsyth and Priyadarshini or Forsyth Point marks the place from where this hill station was seen by the Captain. The Bee Fall or Jamuna Prapat is a wondrous waterfall which provides drinking water to the entire town. The most impressive ravine in Panchmarhi is Handi Kot which has a 300 feet high precipice and very steep sides. An ideal picnic spot is the Apsara Vihar or the Fairy Pool. Rajat Pratap is a very vibrant waterfall just ten minutes away from Apsara Vihar. Irene Pool, as the name suggests was discovered by Irene Bose and subsequently named after her. Lots of devotees visit the holy shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva in the Mahadeo Hill. To the east of this hill is a cave wherein one can see fascinating cave paintings. Jatta Shankar is a formation of rocks resembling the matted locks of Lord Shiva. Pandav Caves as the name suggests is five ancient dwellings excavated in the sandstone rock in a low hill. This hill station is called as Pachmarhi as these caves once provided sanctuary to the five Pandav brothers. The Christ Church is famous for its architecture. One of the notable features is that the nave of this church does not contain even a single pillar for support. Satpura National Park is home to the bison, tiger, leopard, bear, four-horned deer, blue-bell and a rare variety of birds. It spreads over 524 sq. kms and is covered by a dense growth of teak and bamboo forests. The Bison Lodge is a museum which exhibits the rich flora and fauna of Pachmarhi. The most popular visits are to the various caves which houses a lot of cave paintings. Notable among these are Dhuandhar, Bharat Neer, Asthachal, Jambu Dwip, Harper’s Cave, Chieftain’s Cave and the Kites Crag.
