Jaisalmer is situated on the western part of Rajasthan. It is bounded on the west, north and north west by Pakistan. On the south and east are Barmer and Jodhpur and on the north east is Bikaner. The city of Jaisalmer, founded by Rao Jaisal in 1156 AD has a substantially built stone-wall around it 5 kms long, 3-5 mts high and 2-3 mts thick, supported by bastions and corner towers. There are two main entrances to Jaisalmer. Garsisar Gate leading from the east and Amarsagar Gate leading from the west. Inside the city, near the fort is Manak Chowk which once used to be a big grain market (Sagar Mandi). The second oldest fort in Rajasthan is the Golden Fort in Jaisalmer; the oldest is in Chittorgarh. The fort stands on the hill called Gorhara or Tricuta and is 250 feet above the surround. The fort of Jaisalmer was built by Maharaja Jaisal in 1156 AD. It stands on a hill which overlooks the town from the south. It has four gates – Akhai Pol (Ganesh Pol), Suraj Pol, Bhuta Pol and Hawa Pol. There are five beautifully carved Raj Mahals inside the fort viz. Rang Mahal, Sarvottam Vilas, Gaj Mahal, Akhai Villas and Moti Mahal.rang Mahal was built by Mool Raj II, and contains paintings and pictures. One must visit the Patwa Havelis which are five beautifully carved havelis built by the Patwa brothers between 1800 – 1860 A.D. Moti Mahal is a grand edifice of six storeys of cut stones and much decoration especially on the top storey. This mahal has beautiful white fountains on each corner. The most sought after excursion is the Sam Sand Dunes colloquially known as Dara or Dharna. These dunes are 3kms long, 1km wide and ½ kms high. The Wood fossils of Akal, 17 kms from Jaisalmer is a fine example of the fossilization which took place about 180 million years ago when the whole forest composed of huge trees was petrified. Vesakhi about 15kms from Jaisalmer, situated on Ramgarh road near Barhamsar is a hindu pilgrim centre. Amar Sagar Tank is about 7kims from the city. There are three Jain temples, Adeshwar Nath Jain temple being the best. It is situated on the bank of the tank.
