About Gulmarg
Gulmarg is a very popular hill station in Jammu and Kashmir, in Baramula district. It is 56-km south west of Srinagar. Gulmarg stands at 2,730 metres. ‘Gulmarg’ means ‘Meadow of flowers’, the meadow is  about 3-sq-kms in area, and in the spring it's just that, it is full  with countless colourful Bluebells, Daisies, Forget Me Not and Buttercups. The valley itself is about 3-km long and up to a km wide. Gulmarg is close to Indo-Pak border. Surrounding the hill station are snow-capped mountains (Himalayan Peaks), and on a clear day, one can see all the way to Nanga Parbat in one direction and Srinagar in another. Asia's one of the most famous Heli-skiing resort is at Gulmarg, Kashmir. During winters slopes in Gulmarg is  blanketed with snow, forming some of the finest natural slopes for ski runs of all levels. Skiing is normally offered from mid-December to mid-May. Besides skiing one can do trekking, pony ridin, fishing and playing golf. There are a host of snow sports held at Gulmarg every year during snow-time. Tobogganing the most popular among them requires no skill. A flat wooden board is taken up the hill and is allowed to descend downhill. There are also snow scooters and snow bobbing, neither requiring special skills. Sledges as well as sledge-pullers are always available on hire. Situated at an altitude of 2,650 m, Gulmarg has got the highest green golf course in the world. It has 18-hole golf course.
One can experience Asia's highest and longest cable car ride, the Gulmarg Gondola. The two-stage ropeway ferries about 600 people per hour to and from Kongdoori Mountain, a shoulder of nearby Afarwat Peak (4200m/13779ft). Beyond Khilanmarg, 13-km from Gulmarg at the foot of the twin 4, 511 metre Apharwat peaks, there is Alpather Lake, it is frozen until mid-June and even later in the year one can see lumps of ice floating in its cold waters. It offers panoramic view of alpine lake. Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve is located at a distance of 48-km from Srinagar, to its southwest. It is famous for retaining several rare and endangered species such as the musk deer, and a rich and varied avifauna. Every year thousands of devotees come to visit the Shrine Of Baba Reshi / Ziarat Of Baba Reshi. It is placed on the slopes below Gulmarg and can be reached from either Gulmarg or Tangmarg. The Ziarat, or tomb, is of a well-known Muslim saint who died here in 1480.
